2013 World Winter Games Korea

President Lee Myung-bak  of the Republic of Korea pledged his full support to Special Olympics officials this week to host the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games for 2,500 athletes who will compete in the event.

Special Olympics was represented by a high profile group consisting of California Governor Schwarzenegger,  Bart Conner, Nadia Comaneci, and Zhang Ziyi who officially represented Special Olympics in the acceptance ceremony of the World Games. The Special Olympics World Winter Games are held every four years and were last hosted in 2009 in the United States in Idaho.

Special Olympics Arizona is eligible to apply for quota slots for the World Winter Games as part of the Special Olympics Team USA quota selection process, which will occur by late 2011/early 2012.

Location: Pyeongchang, South Korea

Every two years, the world transcends the boundaries of geography, nationality, political philosophy, gender, age, culture and religion to come together for the largest sporting and humanitarian event on the planet: the Special Olympics World Games. Alternating between summer and winter Games, this event is the flagship event of the Special Olympics movement, which promotes equality, tolerance and acceptance around the world. More than 3.7 million Special Olympics athletes play, train and compete in more than 170 nations across the globe.

The Special Olympics World Games features challenging and inspiring international competition among thousands of athletes, making it the world's second-largest sports event, after the Olympic Games. The culmination of years of athletic training and competition, the World Games bring together adults and children with intellectual disabilities to compete on the world's great athletic stages.

Today, Special Olympics offers athletes 32 Olympic-type sports
